Power Quality Improvement Using Self Supported and Battery Supported DVR

Nisha Prakash, Joffie Jacob, Reshmi V

Increased use of sensitive and nonlinear loads in electrical power systems and the rapid growth of renewable energy sources lead to poor power quality. The most regular power quality situations are voltage dip, voltage swell and harmonics. Among these, voltage sag is considered as the most severe power quality problem and a Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is recognized as a successful sort of custom power unit for voltage sag mitigation due to its capacity to manage active power flow, less cost and higher energy capacity. In this thesis, the performance of battery supported and self supported DVR configurations are studied using simulations. The Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) method is used for sag detection and the method of unit vectors is employed for the generation of reference voltage. Simulations are carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC software.
