Modelling and Analysis of Solar Photovoltaic Thermal Collector

Karthick S P, Helen Catherine R L

Sustainable energy sources have attracted the attention of many societies because the power generated is environmentally friendly, but due to the instability, high cost and low efficiency it won’t attain like conventional energy sources. Here a new topology will improve the overall system efficiency of the Solar photovoltaic system. Basically a calorific energy is generated during the photovoltaic conversion of the solar module, which increases the temperature of the cell and will cause a fall in its electric output. This heating is harmful for the photovoltaic cell output. There was also the idea to exploit this phenomenon by the combination of the photovoltaic module with a thermal system to form the photovoltaic thermal (PVT) hybrid collector, which will generate, electricity and heat, at the same time. Here a new design of a PVT collector with single stage inverter is proposed. Since PV cells must be arranged in direct sunlight to produce electricity, heating is inevitable. A heat exchanger can be adapted to a PV cell to extract heat and hence increase the conversion efficiency while using heat absorbed from the cells for secondary applications. The thermal system consists of a rectangular aluminium reservoir that is mounted to the backside of PV panels, through which water flows. Analysis of the proposed photovoltaic-thermal (PV/T) solar panel design was performed using PSIM and ANSYS software.
