A Novel Method to Improve Resolution of Satellite Images Using DWT and Interpolation

S.VENKATA RAMANA , S. NARAYANA REDDY

Satellite images are often used in several areas of research. Resolution is the major issue when concern with these types of images. In this project we propose a novel method to improve the resolution of the satellite images based on discrete wavelet transform and interpolation. 2D-DWT decomposes the satellite image into LL, LH, HL, HL sub bands. The LL band preserves the information of image, remaining sub bands preserves edges information. In proposed method, the high frequency subbands (LH,HL,HH) and the input low resolution sub band(LL) have been interpolated using bicubic interpolation, followed by adding all these sub bands to generate a new improved resolution image by using IDWT. In order to get sharp image an intermediate stage has been used. The proposed method has been tested on images of earth taken from artificial satellite like Himalayas, Coloba-Mumbai, NE coast etc. The quantitative (RMSE and PSNR) results show the superiority of the proposed method over existing methods.
